A press statement issued by Aleng Shaiza, chairman of the Maku Development Council, said that the developmental projects have been "abandoned" midway despite repeated appeals by the villagers to complete the work before the rainy season. The PMGSY road project was awarded to HVS Construction Materials Private Limited, and the PM-ABHIM project was awarded to M/S Kshetrimayum and sublet to one Guneshor Singh, it added. Failure to hear and address repeated demands to resume and complete the projects has forced the village to shut the NH-102A for 48 hours, said the village authority.

The Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Bishnupur has remanded a 39-year-old woman to judicial custody in connection with the alleged murder of her husband on the night of May 30 at a hotel located along Tiddim Road near Moirang Lamkhai in Bishnupur district. Accused, Pukhram ongbi Mayanglambam Ningol Bem alias Manitombi Devi, wife of Late Premkumar of Moirang Khoiru Leikai Ward no 10, was produced before the Court by a team of Moirang Police Station after the expiry of her police custody. The police sought her remand to judicial custody. APP reports
According to the Assistant Public Prosecutor (APP), the accused, during preliminary examination, admitted to the charges levelled against her. She stated that her husband worked as a mason, while she had been employed at a hotel for the past three months, earning a daily wage of Rs 200 to Rs 300 . The couple frequently quarrelled over their financial difficulties. The accused further stated that on May 30, at around 5 pm, she was at work when her husband and two of his co-workers came to the hotel and consumed local liquor. They left the hotel at around 6 pm. At about 7 pm, her husband called her and asked her to return home, saying there were only a few customers at the hotel and that their son had not eaten. She replied that two customers were still at the hotel and that she would return after they left. At around 7.10 pm, the couple reportedly had a heated argument on the roadside near the hotel. Her husband then entered the hotel kitchen, where the argument continued. During the altercation, her husband allegedly grabbed her hand and slapped her in the presence of the hotel owner. As the argument escalated, the accused picked up a knife and threatened to stab herself. She claimed that her husband came close to her and attempted to snatch the knife, during which she stabbed him. She then left the scene immediately. The APP submitted that judicial custody was necessary for proper investigation of the case and for establishing prima facie evidence against the accused. After hearing the submissions of the prosecution and examining the case records, the Court remanded the accused to judicial custody till June 17 . It may be mentioned that the deceased, Pukhram Premkumar, was rushed to the Community Health Centre following the incident but succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter.

Marking World Bicycle Day, social activist and cyclist Malem Thongam on Wednesday submitted a memorandum addressed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah through the Deputy Commissioner of Bishnupur, seeking intervention to ensure that cyclists in Manipur can travel freely across the State. Speaking to the media, Malem expressed disappointment that while cyclists in many parts of the world are able to move freely, cyclists in Manipur continue to face restrictions within their own State. She remarked that World Bicycle Day was being observed with a sense of sorrow in Manipur due to the prevailing situation. Malem stated that on May 5 this year, she had submitted requests to the Chief Minister and the Governor of Manipur seeking permission and support for a "Cycling for Manipur Peace Journey." However, she alleged that two Kuki organisations, namely the Indigenous Tribal Leaders' Forum (ITLF) and the Committee on Tribal Unity (COTU), prevented her from entering the two districts during the proposed journey. She urged the Manipur Government to take legal action against organisations that allegedly hinder efforts aimed at promoting peace and harmony in the State. She further claimed that, following the lack of response from the State Government, appeals had also been made to the Supreme Court and the High Court of Manipur to take up a suo moto on the matter. She said the memorandum was intended to bring the issue to the attention of the Government of India. Although she could not personally meet the Deputy Commissioner of Bishnupur, she submitted the memorandum to the Additional Deputy Commissioner. The memorandum reportedly seeks action against organisations alleged to have obstructed her peace cycling initiative and urges the Union Home Minister to examine the matter. Although she was unable to meet the Deputy Commissioner of Bishnupur personally on Wednesday, she submitted the memorandum through the Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADM). Accompanying her during the submission of the memorandum, Thawai Meerel Convenor Paonam Sanahanbi alleged that Malem Thongam's cycling campaign, which carried the message of peace and harmony for Manipur, had travelled through various states of the country without facing any restrictions. However, she claimed that when Malem attempted to enter Churachandpur district on May 27 as part of the peace journey, security personnel stationed at Tronglaobi stopped the rally from proceeding. Sanahanbi further alleged that Malem was subsequently escorted by police personnel and taken back to her residence. She also claimed that Malem was prevented from proceeding towards Churachandpur on another occasion after being stopped at Phougakchao Ikhai. Criticising the authorities, Sanahanbi stated that if the Government is unable to effectively address the activities of organisations that obstruct free movement and peace initiatives, as well as concerns relating to illegal immigration from Myanmar, those responsible should consider stepping down from their positions.

The Students' Union of Lilong Haoreibi College has appealed to the Government of Manipur and the concerned authorities to immediately appoint a regular Principal at the college, citing serious administrative and development setbacks caused by the prolonged vacancy. In a statement, the union said that Lilong Haoreibi College, located in a minority-concentrated area, is one of the few institutions providing higher education opportunities to students particularly from the Meitei Pangal community. Despite its significant role in promoting education among minority students, the college has been functioning without a regular Principal for a long period of time. The union stated that the absence of a regular Principal has severely affected the overall administration and development of the college. It alleged that the college has been unable to effectively avail various grants and development funds from the University Grants Commission (UGC), resulting in a lack of new infrastructure and academic development projects. According to the union, the continued practice of appointing only an in-charge Principal has further hampered the growth and progress of the institution. It maintained that the college is currently facing a critical situation, with both academic and infrastructural development coming to a standstill. Expressing concern over the future of the institution and its students, the union warned that continued delay in appointing a regular Principal could adversely affect the college's long-term prospects. The Students' Union urged the Chief Minister of Manipur and the concerned authorities to give immediate attention to the issue and appoint a regular Principal at the earliest in the larger interest of the students and the overall development of the college.

Wangkhei AC MLA Th Arunkumar said planting one or two trees is not enough to protect the environment; proper disposal of household waste is essential. He was speaking at the inaugural function of a three-day World Environment Day observance held at T Radhe Community Hall, Soibam Leikai. The event was organised by The North East Artisan's Forum with sponsorship from the Directorate of Environment & Climate Change, Manipur. Th Arunkumar noted that indiscriminate dumping of domestic waste into drains damages the environment and stressed that awareness must begin at home. He warned against felling old trees for development, stating that a tree takes decades to grow but can be cut in moments. Erratic rainfall, frequent floods, droughts, and drying rivers are signs of a disturbed environment, he said, adding that maintaining nature is everyone's duty, not the Government's alone. Environment & Climate Change Director Dr T Brajakumar Singh said rising public concern reflects worsening degradation. Deforestation for comfort is altering rain patterns and causing heat waves. Rivers like Thoubal, Iril and Imphal may dry up, leading to acute water scarcity, he warned. Budha Chingtham, Member, Board of Governors, EZCC, Kolkata, urged cultural workers to spread awareness through theatre and street plays. Citizen's Club, Soibam Leikai president Mahendra Naorem also attended the event.
