14 CSOs line up Jun 8 mass rally on NRC

Thu, 04 Jun 2026 01:01:05 GMT

Piling up more pressure on the Government to first update the National Register of Citizens (NRC) before conducting census operations, the 14 CSOs Kangleipak has lined up a mass protest at Imphal on June 8 . Speaking to media persons at the office of IPSA at Keishamthong today, 14 CSOs, Kangleipak convenor Shanta Nahakpam remarked that both the Central Government and the State Government have taken up several steps which seem to be undermining and sidestepping the people's demand for updating the NRC before the census operations.

The Government of India published a gazette notification on May 26 about the constitution of a high level committee to look into demographic changes. According to the gazette notification, the high level committee should submit its report within one year. However, the State Government has not taken up any step to get any official from the State inducted into the high level committee. The State Government may send an officer of the defunct Manipur State Population Commission as a member of the high level committee, Shanta said. On the other hand, the State Government published a gazette notification on May 23 which said that the 6th Panchayat election will be held based on the 2001 census report. But the census report of 2001 was mired in a big controversy following unnatural population growth in nine sub-divisions. Many cases related to this unnatural growth are still pending in Courts, he said. If the Panchayat election is held based on this controversial and contested census report, it will only legitimise the same census report, Shanta said. Moreover, the census report of 2011 was published after incorporating the controversial report of 2001, he said. It would be wrong to assume that the purpose of the high level committee is similar to that of updating the NRC, he asserted. Considering the urgent need for updating the NRC and to elicit a concrete response from the Government, the 14 CSOs Kangleipak is organising a mass rally on June 8 . The rally will start from Tiddim Ground at 10 am and wrap up at THAU Ground with a public meeting, Shanta said. He appealed to all sections of the people to join and extend support to the rally.

A large number of Anganwadi workers and helpers stormed the Directorate of Social Welfare at North AOC, Imphal today. The Anganwadi workers and helpers, under the Manipur Anganwadi Mahila Organisation (MAMO), have been demanding extension of retirement age from 60 years to 65 years, swift and complete release of all honorarium, incentives through DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer) and retirement benefits. They have also asserted that no new recruitment may be conducted until their demands are met. The Manipur Anganwadi Mahila Organisation (MAMO) had launched the stir on April 18 .

During the protest demonstration today, MAMO general secretary S Shairabati Devi said the Social Welfare Department must organise a meeting inviting MAMO representatives and officials of the Labour Department at the earliest to discuss the demands and bring about a resolution. Until an agreement is reached, the Anganwadi workers and helpers will not cease the stir, she said. MAMO president Loukrakpam Sanatombi said many States in India have extended the retirement age of Anganwadi workers and helpers to 65 years. The States include Bihar, Chandigarh, Chhattisgarh, Ladakh, Meghalaya and Telangana. While Anganwadi workers are supposed to get an incentive of Rs 500 a month, they have not been paid in full. Some are paid Rs 250 and many others are getting just Rs 125, she claimed. The incentive and honorarium must be paid in full and timely, she added. Despite assurances given during the previous Government and during President's Rule, the Government has not yet met the demands, she said, asserting that the stir will continue until the demands are fulfilled. The Directorate of Social Welfare, has meanwhile, stated that a proposal to the Administrative Department has already been submitted to expedite the decision of enhancement of working age of Anganwadi workers, helpers on April 6 . Further, the Department has also submitted a comparative data on the retirement age in respect of different States, particularly the North East States, as sought by the Administrative Department, it said. So far, there has been no instruction from the Government for enhancement of the age of superannuation of Anganwadi workers and Anganwadi helpers. Once the age of retirement of Anganwadi workers and helpers is fixed, due honorarium shall be released immediately, it said. Also, the total vacancy as per Poshan Tracker report are 777 for Anganwadi workers and 2,100 for Anganwadi helpers. A large number of vacancies in the Anganwadi centres has caused a lot of inconveniences in providing Anganwadi services to children below the age of 6 years, lactating mothers and pregnant women across the State, it noted. All due pending incentives for Poshan Tracker, CBE (Community-Based Events) and PMMVY (Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana) have been paid to all eligible Anganwadi workers and helpers. Under Supplementary Nutrition Programme (SNP), Take-Home Ration (THR) and Hot-Cooked Meals (HCM) are provided to the Anganwadi Centres adequately and regularly. Sometimes, HCM could be delayed due to delay in the release of Central share from the Ministry, it added.

Maku village announces 48 hrs NH102 A shutdown

Thu, 04 Jun 2026 01:01:05 GMT

The Maku village authority has declared a 48-hour shutdown of the NH-102 (A) from June 4 midnight to June 6 midnight over "abandonment" of the PMGSY work and PHSC building construction project. A press statement issued by Aleng Shaiza, chairman of the Maku Development Council, said that the developmental projects have been "abandoned" midway despite repeated appeals by the villagers to complete the work before the rainy season. It alleged that the Manipur State Rural Roads Development Agency (MSRRDA), the Rural Engineering Department (RED), and the Engineering Cell (Hill-I) have neglected the village and its people. It further alleged that the guidelines under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) and PM-ABHIM (Pradhan Mantri-Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission) have been flouted. While the Maku village PMGSY road stretching 8 kilometres costing Rs 334.69 lakh was scheduled for completion by April 2020, the construction of the building of the Maku Primary Health Sub-Centre (PHSC) has been abandoned for over 11 months, said the village authority. The PMGSY road project was awarded to HVS Construction Materials Private Limited, and the PM-ABHIM project was awarded to M/S Kshetrimayum and sublet to one Guneshor Singh, it added. Failure to hear and address repeated demands to resume and complete the projects has forced the village to shut the NH-102A for 48 hours, said the village authority.

The Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Bishnupur has remanded a 39-year-old woman to judicial custody in connection with the alleged murder of her husband on the night of May 30 at a hotel located along Tiddim Road near Moirang Lamkhai in Bishnupur district. Accused, Pukhram ongbi Mayanglambam Ningol Bem alias Manitombi Devi, wife of Late Premkumar of Moirang Khoiru Leikai Ward no 10, was produced before the Court by a team of Moirang Police Station after the expiry of her police custody. The police sought her remand to judicial custody. APP reports

According to the Assistant Public Prosecutor (APP), the accused, during preliminary examination, admitted to the charges levelled against her. She stated that her husband worked as a mason, while she had been employed at a hotel for the past three months, earning a daily wage of Rs 200 to Rs 300 . The couple frequently quarrelled over their financial difficulties. The accused further stated that on May 30, at around 5 pm, she was at work when her husband and two of his co-workers came to the hotel and consumed local liquor. They left the hotel at around 6 pm. At about 7 pm, her husband called her and asked her to return home, saying there were only a few customers at the hotel and that their son had not eaten. She replied that two customers were still at the hotel and that she would return after they left. At around 7.10 pm, the couple reportedly had a heated argument on the roadside near the hotel. Her husband then entered the hotel kitchen, where the argument continued. During the altercation, her husband allegedly grabbed her hand and slapped her in the presence of the hotel owner. As the argument escalated, the accused picked up a knife and threatened to stab herself. She claimed that her husband came close to her and attempted to snatch the knife, during which she stabbed him. She then left the scene immediately. The APP submitted that judicial custody was necessary for proper investigation of the case and for establishing prima facie evidence against the accused. After hearing the submissions of the prosecution and examining the case records, the Court remanded the accused to judicial custody till June 17 . It may be mentioned that the deceased, Pukhram Premkumar, was rushed to the Community Health Centre following the incident but succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter.

Cyclist Malem Thongam submits memorandum seeking free movement across Manipur

Cyclist Malem Thongam submits memorandum seeking free movement across Manipur

Thu, 04 Jun 2026 01:01:05 GMT

Marking World Bicycle Day, social activist and cyclist Malem Thongam on Wednesday submitted a memorandum addressed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah through the Deputy Commissioner of Bishnupur, seeking intervention to ensure that cyclists in Manipur can travel freely across the State. Speaking to the media, Malem expressed disappointment that while cyclists in many parts of the world are able to move freely, cyclists in Manipur continue to face restrictions within their own State. She remarked that World Bicycle Day was being observed with a sense of sorrow in Manipur due to the prevailing situation. Malem stated that on May 5 this year, she had submitted requests to the Chief Minister and the Governor of Manipur seeking permission and support for a "Cycling for Manipur Peace Journey." However, she alleged that two Kuki organisations, namely the Indigenous Tribal Leaders' Forum (ITLF) and the Committee on Tribal Unity (COTU), prevented her from entering the two districts during the proposed journey. She urged the Manipur Government to take legal action against organisations that allegedly hinder efforts aimed at promoting peace and harmony in the State. She further claimed that, following the lack of response from the State Government, appeals had also been made to the Supreme Court and the High Court of Manipur to take up a suo moto on the matter. She said the memorandum was intended to bring the issue to the attention of the Government of India. Although she could not personally meet the Deputy Commissioner of Bishnupur, she submitted the memorandum to the Additional Deputy Commissioner. The memorandum reportedly seeks action against organisations alleged to have obstructed her peace cycling initiative and urges the Union Home Minister to examine the matter. Although she was unable to meet the Deputy Commissioner of Bishnupur personally on Wednesday, she submitted the memorandum through the Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADM). Accompanying her during the submission of the memorandum, Thawai Meerel Convenor Paonam Sanahanbi alleged that Malem Thongam's cycling campaign, which carried the message of peace and harmony for Manipur, had travelled through various states of the country without facing any restrictions. However, she claimed that when Malem attempted to enter Churachandpur district on May 27 as part of the peace journey, security personnel stationed at Tronglaobi stopped the rally from proceeding. Sanahanbi further alleged that Malem was subsequently escorted by police personnel and taken back to her residence. She also claimed that Malem was prevented from proceeding towards Churachandpur on another occasion after being stopped at Phougakchao Ikhai. Criticising the authorities, Sanahanbi stated that if the Government is unable to effectively address the activities of organisations that obstruct free movement and peace initiatives, as well as concerns relating to illegal immigration from Myanmar, those responsible should consider stepping down from their positions.

Lilong Haoreibi College students demand appointment of regular Principal

Lilong Haoreibi College students demand appointment of regular Principal

Thu, 04 Jun 2026 01:01:05 GMT

The Students' Union of Lilong Haoreibi College has appealed to the Government of Manipur and the concerned authorities to immediately appoint a regular Principal at the college, citing serious administrative and development setbacks caused by the prolonged vacancy. In a statement, the union said that Lilong Haoreibi College, located in a minority-concentrated area, is one of the few institutions providing higher education opportunities to students particularly from the Meitei Pangal community. Despite its significant role in promoting education among minority students, the college has been functioning without a regular Principal for a long period of time. The union stated that the absence of a regular Principal has severely affected the overall administration and development of the college. It alleged that the college has been unable to effectively avail various grants and development funds from the University Grants Commission (UGC), resulting in a lack of new infrastructure and academic development projects. According to the union, the continued practice of appointing only an in-charge Principal has further hampered the growth and progress of the institution. It maintained that the college is currently facing a critical situation, with both academic and infrastructural development coming to a standstill. Expressing concern over the future of the institution and its students, the union warned that continued delay in appointing a regular Principal could adversely affect the college's long-term prospects. The Students' Union urged the Chief Minister of Manipur and the concerned authorities to give immediate attention to the issue and appoint a regular Principal at the earliest in the larger interest of the students and the overall development of the college.

Wangkhei MLA stresses household waste management at World Environment Day event

Thu, 04 Jun 2026 01:01:05 GMT

Wangkhei AC MLA Th Arunkumar said planting one or two trees is not enough to protect the environment; proper disposal of household waste is essential. He was speaking at the inaugural function of a three-day World Environment Day observance held at T Radhe Community Hall, Soibam Leikai. The event was organised by The North East Artisan's Forum with sponsorship from the Directorate of Environment & Climate Change, Manipur. Th Arunkumar noted that indiscriminate dumping of domestic waste into drains damages the environment and stressed that awareness must begin at home. He warned against felling old trees for development, stating that a tree takes decades to grow but can be cut in moments. Erratic rainfall, frequent floods, droughts, and drying rivers are signs of a disturbed environment, he said, adding that maintaining nature is everyone's duty, not the Government's alone. Environment & Climate Change Director Dr T Brajakumar Singh said rising public concern reflects worsening degradation. Deforestation for comfort is altering rain patterns and causing heat waves. Rivers like Thoubal, Iril and Imphal may dry up, leading to acute water scarcity, he warned. Budha Chingtham, Member, Board of Governors, EZCC, Kolkata, urged cultural workers to spread awareness through theatre and street plays. Citizen's Club, Soibam Leikai president Mahendra Naorem also attended the event.

The Thadou Students' Association (TSA) has welcomed the appointment of Mukesh Singh, IPS, as Manipur's new Director General of Police, who assumed charge on June 1, 2026, at Police Headquarters, Mantripukhri. Citing the May 13, 2026 terrorist ambush on Thadou Church leaders at Kotlen-Kotzim Inter Village Road that killed Rev Dr Vumthang Sitlhou and two others, TSA said the attack exposed a "total breakdown of law and order" and had earlier demanded the previous DGP's removal. While calling the leadership change "long-overdue", TSA stressed that it must lead to visible results. It urged the new DGP to immediately transfer the case to the NIA, ensure security for victims and witnesses, launch intelligence-driven operations to arrest all involved, enforce impartial policing, and rebuild public trust through transparency. TSA added that the Thadou people have faced threats from "Kuki terrorism" and said all communities should be identified by their correct names, noting Manipur is multi-ethnic, not tri-ethnic.

FORCE, Kshetrigao ended their two-game losing run in the 4th MNCA Men's U-19 One Day Trophy Group B competition by handing SU, Sagolband a 34-run defeat at Khangabok Cherapur Public Ground today. SU won the toss and let FORCE to bat first. Riding on a concerted effort among the bowlers, SU managed to dismiss FORCE for 132 runs in 29 overs but they faltered badly in the chase and were bundled out for 98 runs in 19.3 overs to go down for the third time in the league round. FORCE had a stuttering start to the innings and slipped to 45/4 in 16.4 overs with Sagolshem Hemjit collecting scalps of three top order batters including Jaheer and Ziad Khan on ducks. Zaheer (44 off 43 balls) and Syed Ashif (39 off 31 balls) gave FORCE some hopes midway by adding 69 runs for the fifth wicket. Things got worst for the team as David Keisham and Philan Rajkumar joined the fray and claimed a wicket apiece to leave FORCE struggling at 128/6 before A Romen, who undone Syed Fayaz on a 3-ball duck for the third wicket, bowled out Zaheer and set up Epham Muskur catch to complete his treble of wickets in the 28th over and reduced FORCE to 128/8 . Kritivash Ningthoujam then took the honour to pick the remaining two wickets and walked away with the bowling figures of 2/22 in 6 overs. Hemjit returned with the best figures of 3/19 in 6 overs for SU as A Romen finished with 3/15 in 5 overs. In reply, opener Ningombam Ambedkar (30 off 48 balls) and David Keisham (17 off 22 balls) emerged the only double digit run getters for SU as they were bowled out for a paltry total of 98 runs in 19.3 overs. Ziad Khan (3/17 in 6 overs), Epham Muskur (3/21 in 2.3 overs) and Moinam Hafizuddin (2/13 in 5 overs) shared a bulk of 8 wickets to unsettle SU batters during the chase as Jaheer picked one (1/5 in 2 overs) .
